A local gardener who prefers to be anonymous should be crowned the "Zucchini King."

This master gardener has already donated a ton of zucchini this summer to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. That's a ton as in truckloads of 250 pounds, delivered two times a week for the past month.

Students Serve Up Annual Thank You for Volunteers November 27, 2003

On Wednesday morning, 18-year-old David McCauley was doing the mashed potato, not to music but with a wire whisk, whipping up some of the 40 pounds of boiled spuds prepared by students at the Career Education Center.

Peeling potatoes, chopping onions, roasting turkeys, serving salad and pouring juice becomes part of the volunteer curriculum for CES students every Thanksgiving.

Turkey Donations Increase November 24, 2003
"We guarantee food to eat," Kirstein said, "but we don't guarantee (whole) turkeys." Many of the turkey donations are half turkeys or turkey pieces. "We also have some wonderful pot roast meals," Kirstein added.

For the past few years, 600 food boxes have been put together for the event. However, this year, volunteers are preparing an extra 100 boxes because of the higher food demand the Food Bank has experienced over the past 12 months.

"The needs this year have been extraordinarily high," Kirstein said. "We've served 3,000 more people in the last 12 months than the previous 12 months."

From sharecropping to the Internet June 3, 2002
How do you even begin to describe R.G. Bouchum? Do you start with his childhood, telling how the 85-year-old grew up the son of East Texas sharecroppers? How he dropped out midway through elementary school to help support his eight brothers and sisters?
