Matthew Collins, Manager of Vehicles and Maintenance, dies at 48

Matthew Allen Collins, 48, passed away Aug. 6, 2013, in Fairbanks, from lung cancer.

Matthew was born Feb. 22, 1965 in Athens, Ohio, and has lived in Alaska for 20 years, in Fairbanks and at Fort Wainwright. He married Belinda Collins in 1992 in Clarksville, Tenn.

He was the manager of maintenance, buildings and vehicles at the Fairbanks Community Food Bank.

Matthew was a loving, hard-working man with a blunt and honest personality. You could never predict what was on his mind or what he would say next. His world revolved around his grandchildren and children. Matthew was known as the go-to-guy when something needed to be fixed. He was a very uplifting man.

The family states, "Until we meet again, may you find peace in heaven's hand."

Matthew is survived by his son, Damion Washington, of Fairbanks; daughters, Amber Washington and Trisha Flores, both of Fairbanks; nephews, Geoffrey Zamora and Jeremey Zamora, of Anchorage; grandson, Jeremiah Washington, of Fairbanks; granddaughter, D'Asia Washington, of Fairbanks; the Collins family, of Ohio; and close friends, Tom and Sam Kirstein, Bo, Anne, Hannah and Ezra Weaver, Rodney Gaskins, Austin Brown, Becky Miller and Mike Kolasa, all of Fairbanks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Anna Collins; and his former wife, Belinda F. Collins.

A memorial service will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at the JP Jones Community Development Center, 2400 Rickert St., Fairbanks. The Rev. Phillips will officiate.

Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
